Why trauma focused?
In school and in business I have felt a lot of pressure to come up with a “niche” and at times have even found it fun to explore what that could mean for me. Through all of the training and expertise I’ve gained from clinical practice and school, Trauma-Focused just made sense to me.
We know that the things that happen to us influence our brains functioning and thus the way that we carry ourselves in our every day life. Trauma-focused gives me hope that we aren’t just “stuck” with who we are and gives me hope that people can create better iterations of themselves through learning about who we were in the past. Sometimes it takes digging yourself out of a hole to be able to fill it and this is how I few trauma-focused care. I have seen Trauma-Focused care provide people with a level of knowing, validation and agency surrounding their own life experience.
Trauma-informed is also having a moment of fame in the therapy space. I differentiate from this term because I view trauma as the main character of our story and one that has many different character arches throughout our life. Regardless of how you identify as a human there’s always something that we can work on that has a relation to the things that have happened to us in the past that was maybe not stored correctly. Trauma informed means you know how trauma can influence a person and being trauma-focused I would like to continually dedicate my practice to a curiosity around trauma. This shows up in the trainings that I do, the clients I see and my own personal commitment to having agency in my life.
